Science Meets Society: On Lake Ecosystems
As part of METU’s 70th Anniversary Interterm Seminars (DAS), one of the key sessions of the “Science Meets Society” event series was successfully held on February 12, 2026.
During the seminar, Prof. Dr. Meryem Beklioğlu, faculty member of the Department of Biological Sciences at Middle East Technical University and Director of EKOSAM, delivered a presentation titled “Impacts of land and water use and climate change on lake ecosystems.”
The presentation addressed the direct and indirect effects of changes in land use, water management practices, and climate change on lake ecosystems, supported by scientific evidence. In particular, the impacts of eutrophication, rising temperatures, and anthropogenic pressures on the structure, functioning, and biodiversity of lake ecosystems were discussed in detail.
